Are you suffering with pain and tightness in the buttocks area? Is the pain radiating down into the back of your leg? Is stretching just making the entire condition worse?
In today's video we are discussing the piriformis muscle and a condition known as piriformis syndrome.
The piriformis muscle attaches to the front lateral aspect of the sacrum and attaches to the upper part (greater trochanter) of the femur. It lies deep to the gluteus maximus muscle.
Why does this muscle sometimes cause so much trouble? Because the sciatic nerve runs underneath it. Also, in the about 20% of the population, the sciatic nerve actually runs through the piriformis. Therefore, a piriformis muscle that has spasm, fascial adhesions (scar tissue), restriction, etc. can irritate that sciatic nerve.
In today's video, I demonstrate how to perform myofascial release therapy on your tight and tender piriformis muscle using a Massage Ball MAX from OcraMed Health.
